What is Thai Massage?

Thai massage, Thai yoga massage and Thai yoga therapy are terms used in Europe to describe a special form of massage that originates from Thailand. In Thailand it is called “Nuat Phaen Boran” (traditional massage) or “Nuat Thai” (Thai massage).

Thai massage is based on influences from India, China and a long tradition in Thailand. In Thailand, Thai massage is practiced in different forms. Thai massage is now also very popular in Europe.

A Thai massage consists of a combination of acupressure and yoga-like stretches. In Thailand, Thai massage is a medical treatment that is carried out in hospitals, for example, but it is also carried out in many villages by local healers/masseurs who have acquired their knowledge through oral tradition and practice.

Thai massage is based on yoga principles that originated in India. It is also similar to Chinese massage techniques such as shiatsu. Thai massage is based on the theory that energy lines run through our body. Therefore, the Thai masseuse will work on acupressure points throughout the body. These acupressure points can be used to stimulate the patient's mind or body, to relax them, or to promote natural healing processes.

A Thai masseuse adapts the massage to the individual constitution of the customer. Thai massage is generally suitable for people of all ages and can complement any type of sport or physical activity. The mixture of acupressure and stretching can be particularly helpful for people who are stiff or overexerted from work or sport. In the case of illness, however, a Thai massage can under no circumstances replace medical treatment.

The History of Thai Massage

In Thailand, there are hardly any historical records of Thai massage before 1800. Nevertheless, it is known that today's Thai massage is based on 5 pillars:

  • Buddhism – For two thousand years, Buddhist texts have documented teachings about the body, illnesses and their healing. Buddhist ideas also play an important role in modern Thai massage.
  • Ayurveda – Ayurvedic elements spread from India to Asia very early on. Texts about traditional Thai massage often contain references to these principles
  • Yoga – In Thailand there is a family of yoga exercises called “luesii dat ton”. These exercises have had a strong influence on classical Thai massage.
  • Chinese influences – Elements of traditional Chinese medicine such as foot reflexology have also been incorporated into Thai massage.
  • Traditional Thai medicine – Thai massage has adopted many elements from traditional Thai medicine.
